Hailing from Italian companies, the 88 Azimut and Ferretti 881 offer Italian styling and craftsmanship in this mini-megayacht range. Both vessels deliver light and airy indoor spaces, owner/guest privacy and comfort, and generous outdoor living and entertaining areas, including an aft “beach” platform, tender and toy storage, and optional hot tub. They are also both top performers with plenty of technical innovations to make cruising more powerful, yet still pleasurable.
Azimut Yachts is owned by the Azimut Benetti Group, and Ferretti Yachts is part of the Ferretti Group. Standards initiated by Azimut include electric seats, large frameless windows, and walnut interiors. The design of the Azimut 88 reflects consideration for maximum enjoyment of the sea, from glass windows in the deckhouse and double panoramic hull windows to a 180-square-foot flybridge with protective hard top. Similarly, the Ferretti 881 welcomes natural light and views of the sea and ports of call with large open view windows in the master and on the main deck and also features a flybridge outfitted for maximum enjoyment.
The Azimut 88 flying bridge has a fully equipped bar, barbecue, optional Jacuzzi toward the stern (or tender storage), dinette for eight to ten, and plenty of sun loungers—including Azimut’s traditional C-shaped sofa on the bow. With easy access to the large swim platform (“beach”) via two staircases, the Azimut 88’s cockpit settee seats eight to ten with the addition of folding teak chairs. The swim platform can handle more sun loungers, a jet ski, and your tender up to 12’7” long and weighing up to 1,100 lbs. It can all be shaded by a hideaway canopy.
Similarly, the Ferretti 881 boasts plenty of entertainment options in its outdoor areas starting with seating for at least 12 on the bridge, optional hot tub, large sun beds, and mini-galley with refrigerator, cook top, and bar. Shading is provided by a large Bimini top from the arch mast or optional hard top. The cockpit accommodates a table and settee with seating for eight. The garage built into the stern with hydraulic latch can accommodate a small tender or jet ski, in addition to dive equipment and other toys. The “garage” door (or transom when folded up) actually hinges down to create a 90-square-foot teak watersports deck. A handy hydraulic swim ladder on the port side of the boat and hydraulic passerelle (with remote control wand) from the starboard stairway to the aft deck make access easy by land and by sea.
The main deck of the Azimut 88 contains a dining area for eight, welcoming saloon, day head, and cockpit, with the helm station outfitted with its own dinette. Galley is starboard and aft of the helm and can be closed off from the dining area.
The Azimut 88 features three guest cabins forward accessible from the wheelhouse above, configured with two doubles and one twin, each with their own head. The large master amidships (right) has a private stairway from the saloon. It contains a full beam head, walk in closet, and plenty of stowage. The VIP cabin forward boasts large windows and ensuite head.
The highly lacquered classic cherry interior of the Ferretti 881 features innovative use of space, thanks to Studio Zuccon International Project and the Ferretti Group Engineering Division. The 22’ beam of the Ferretti actually yields over 380 more square feet of living and deck space than similar-sized vessels with a 20’ beam. Not only does this affect the outside deck spaces, but it also creates one of the largest VIP staterooms forward on an 88-footer like this—in addition to a large master. A dining table for eight fits nicely—even athwartship.
The large galley located forward of the dining area boasts more of a peninsula rather than an island resulting in generous counter space. Moving downstairs, the sleeping portion of the amidships master is on the port side and features a seat practically at sea level. On the starboard side sits the master bath with ample light and space. Two amidships guest staterooms feature Pullmans which can sleep up to six between the two rooms. Aft of the master are the two crew cabins.
Owner/Guest Privacy and Crew Accommodations
The 88 Azimut protects owner privacy with a system of discrete passages and two-sided doors that yield to outdoor walkways in service areas. Separated from owner and guest quarters, the crew area is positioned all the way aft with easy access to the engine room and has a single berth for the captain and upper and lowers for two crew. The area also contains a lounge area, head, refrigerator, washer/dryer, crew dinette, and stowage.
The Ferretti 881 also respects owner/guest privacy, as exhibited in the outside door and forward door leading to the pilothouse from the galley. The 881 features crew quarters forward of the equipment room with two cabins (Pullman berths) port and starboard separated by a dinette for four. The quarters feature a two-burner stove, refrigerator, sink, washer/dryer, and television. (An added benefit of placing crew quarters and the equipment rooms between the master and the engines: a quiet master stateroom thanks to the placement of two extra bulkheads and over 10 feet between the master and engine room.)
Power, Performance, and Operations
The Azimut 88 is powered by twin Caterpillar C32 ACERT 1825-hp diesels with ZF 3000 V-drives. Her UCS (Unique Control System) consists of a built-in pilot station, including pilot chair with armrest controls. The joystick can maneuver the vessel underway at top speed or handle delicate operations such as docking. Other Azimut operation innovations include Easy Handling, Easy Cruising, and Easy Docking.
The Ferretti 881 is powered by 16V 2000-hp MTU diesels, also with ZF V-drive marine gears. In the Ferretti, this configuration allows engines to be placed about 6’ further aft for extra living space. Ferretti has separated its diesels and gen sets from the rest of the vessel’s systems and equipment which are forward through a watertight hatch, creating a 22’ x 15’ engine room free of clutter and grime. Access is easy. A confidence in stability perhaps has led Ferretti to leave off stabilizers as standard. Ferretti boasts use of the most advanced common-rail engines for top performance, safely and quietly, in addition to its advanced ARG (Anti-Rolling Gyro) stabilization system (which works even when the boat is stopped), and the ZF SteerCommand system which replaces traditional hydraulic steerage for simpler maneuvering of the vessel.

The Ferretti 881’s overall length is 88’10”with a beam of 22’. This beam is noteworthy as it enhances side deck usage (great for easier line handling), allows for a wider main salon, and enhances stability in tough seas. Her draft is 7’2”. Max speed is 30 knots with cruising speed at 25 knots with a range of 400 miles. Fuel capacity is 2,378 gal., and water capacity is 349 gallons. Her angle of deadrise at transom of 12 degrees.
