As we enter the holiday season drones are an increasingly popular gift that many want to find under their tree, or on the deck of their luxury yachts for that matter!
Remote-controlled drones are no longer mere toys. They are now becoming more and more sophisticated, with features that are broadening their appeal to hobbyists, and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds, and boaters are no exception!
These marvels of aerial robotics have even spawned a new water sport – drone surfing!
But, not just any drone is right to use off of a yacht. Here is our list of some of the best drones equipped to take on the sea!
Splash Drone – The Splash Drone was one of the first water proof models, designed specifically for marine use. It is completely water proof, has a flight time of about 20 minutes, and can actually “see” underwater.
Go Pro Karma – The GoPro camera has established the name in action photography for the adrenaline junkie. The Karma is a drone specifically made to work with a GoPro Hero 4 or Hero 5 camera, and is the must have for entry level drone movie makers.
The Lily – If documenting your cruising adventures is what you want a drone for, Lily is designed for the ultimate “selfie.” The Lily is less a drone than a fully-autonomous flying camera. There is no controller, you just launch her, and she will record your every move.
Power Egg Drone – The Power Egg offers a unique and sophisticated design that will look as good left out on your bar, or as a centerpiece in your salon, as it is fun to fly!
OpenROV Trident – And, last but not least on our list, is the OpenROV Trident. Not every drone for yachts can fly! Have you ever wanted to explore the depths, do some cave diving, or search for ship wrecks or the Loch Ness Monster, but SCUBA is not your thing? The Trident is an underwater drone, a robot submersible that allows you to explore the briny deep from the safety of your Flydeck!
The most popular use for drones on a yacht, are documenting your voyages and excursions with the stunning aerial photographs and HD videos that they can create. But, a growing number of yachtsmen and their captains are realizing a drone’s benefit as a safety device and an aid to navigation. They can be your “eyes and ears” sent out ahead to check for shoals, rough water, or bad weather, and in the event of an emergency, can drop a lifesaving device to a man overboard, of even catch the attention of another vessel for help!
