For those who were able to sneak a peek at the world premiere of the Cheoy Lee Alpha 87 Express Sportbridge last fall at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, you’ll understand why she’s been nominated for an International Yacht & Aviation (IY&A) Award. Cheoy Lee entered the vessel into the Power Yacht 25-40 meter category.
Improving and expanding upon its Alpha 76 Sports and Flybridge models, Chinese shipyard Cheoy Lee offered the first Alpha 87 (26.5m) Express Sport (ES) motoryacht. Michael Peters Yacht Design takes billing for the naval architecture and design which reflects a thoughtful approach to exterior lines, hull efficiency, seakeeping and handling—and an overall quality that stands out in a market flush with high volume builders. Structural engineering meets GL class standards. Luiz de Basto is responsible for the contemporary, yet practical, interior design that exceeds what you’d find in similar express yachts with detailing and high end fixtures that approach custom yacht levels.
The Cheoy Lee Alpha 87 Express Sport is a versatile sportbridge yet offers flybridge features as well as custom build quality in the container of an express yacht. She’s got the extra length and volume that allows for four spacious and well-appointed staterooms belowdecks, equally spacious dining area, galley, main salon and helm all on the main deck. Her lounging and entertaining possibilities are endless inside and out. Plenty of glass allows for openness, light and safe navigation.
Dramatic, twin curved stairs just ahead of the lower helm station lead guests up to the main deck. An eight-person dining area located centrally aft of the helm station offers access to the open galley and anchors the main deck. Through stainless framed doors, the aft deck offers many seating, relaxing and lounging opportunities with close proximity to a wet bar. A fully retractable awning offers protection from the sun and elements.
The Alpha 87 sleeps eight guests. The full beam master features a king-sized bed, settee, vanity and ensuite head with his and hers areas, a large shower and jet tub. The scent of cedar fills the room when the well-lit, spacious walk-in closet is entered. Nicely-sized hull windows allow views and light into the luxurious living quarters. The queen guest stateroom to port, a VIP queen forward and twin to starboard have lots of storage as well as ensuite heads and showers. Crew quarters aft include two staterooms, a fully equipped galley and dinette.
Stairs from the aft deck descend to a swim platform where just forward, space for a tender garage with automatic launch device has been allocated. Above the garage a large sun pad calls sun-hungry worshippers, but it can just as easily house a four-person hot tub below. An equally inviting settee awaits forward toward the bow, which contains a generous amount of storage.
With standard power from twin CAT C32 ACERTs (1900hp@2,300rpm), the Cheoy Lee Alpha 87 Express Sportbridge will top 30 knots. She’ll obviously exceed that with optional 2,600hp twin MTU 16V-2000s. Her beam measures 21’7” and she draws 5’5”.
