While the eyes of most sports fans are now firmly focused on the Olympic Games in Rio, did you know that there is an International event that happens every year in our area, that experts have said, has a bigger economic impact than a Super Bowl?
I am talking about the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, or FLIBS. Speaking with industry publication Trade Only Today, Phil Purcell, executive director of the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, said, “The economic impact of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show dwarfs the Super Bowl, and it happens year after year…”
Purcell was able to make such a statement based on a report the Association, which owns FLIBS, commissioned along with Show Management who produces it. The report, based on a study done by Thomas J. Murray and Associates in conjunction with the University of Florida, found that, “The 56th Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which was held Nov. 5-9 last year, contributed $857 million to the overall economy in the state of Florida.”
Positive Impact of the Boat Show
The positive impact of the 2015 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show “by the numbers” detailed in the report include:
- $508.3 million in total sales by FLIBS participants
- $380.8 million in estimated sales by Florida companies, of which $240.7 million was contributed by the tri-county area and $131.5 million by Broward County
- $51.2 million in sales and excise taxes, with $16.9 million in Broward County alone
- $304.3 million in statewide personal income and economic activity
- $29.6 million in non-local visitor expenditures
