News From The Cannes Yachting Festival

There are two major festivals that the glamorous and beautiful city of Cannes is known for — its legendary film festival, and the Cannes Yachting Festival. This year’s yachting festival which was held from September 8th -13th recently wrapped up.

The Cannes Yachting Festival is one of Europe’s premier yachting events. More than 580 luxury yachts were on display. The Festival brings together the major players and shipbuilders in pleasure boating and international luxury yachting, presenting a showcase for some of the best-of-the best in luxury yachts available for both charter and sale.

Some of the world’s most celebrated and popular yacht builders and designers can be found at the Cannes Yachting festival including: Azimut, Benetti, Filippetti Yachts, Ferretti, Monte Carlo Yachts, RIVA, Canados, AB Yachts, Perini Navi, Fairline, Abeking & Rasmussen, Cantieri Navali Cerri, Curvelle, Sunreef Yachts, Princess Yachts, and many more.

Cannes, located on the Mediterranean, has always been a prestigious yachting destination. This was the 38th edition of the festival, which began in 1977. The Cannes Yacht Club has been around for 155 years, making it one of the oldest in the world.

Highlights From the Festival

There were over 150 world premieres exhibited at the 2015 Festival, including: the French built Lagoon 630, a diesel-electric hybrid yacht, the Supreme Benetti Tradition 108, the Riva Mythos 122, the Beneteau Oceanis 60, and the Pershing 70, among many more.

Some of the other “must see yachts” at the festival, as reported by Forbes Magazine were, the premier of Baglietto Yachts 150-foot superyacht named Only One, Monte Carlo Yachts MCY105, also making its debut at the Festival, and the Sanlorenzo 460EXP – a prime example of what are known as “explorer yachts,” built as much for size and luxury as they are for endurance and long-term cruising in comfort.

One of the more interesting yachts exhibited was Arcadia Yachts 115-foot “Tortoise.” The Tortoise got its name, not because it is slow by any means, but was designed specifically using “green” building techniques, and to reduce its carbon footprint. The environmentally friendly motoryacht is equipped with double-glazed solar panels to power utilities and recharge batteries, and its fiberglass, semi-displacement hull helps maximize efficiency, reducing emissions due to lower engine demand.

Besides the 100s of luxury motor yachts on display, there was also significant industry news from the festival. During the opening press conference of the Festival, the Ferretti Group announced it was experiencing significant growth, with positive cash flow and a 105% increase in orders.

A Sad Note

Not all the news from the festival was good, however. There were reports of a Serbian journalist who was killed during a demonstration on September 12th.  The women was ejected from the boat she was touring for reasons unknown and was killed by the propeller. The tragedy reminds us all about as much as we love boating, it can be dangerous, and even among the glitz and glamour of a major boat show, captains and passengers must thing safety first.
