Nordhavn Delivers N86 Expedition Yacht KOONOONA

There’s nothing that calls out wanderlust quite like an expedition yacht. The recently delivered Nordhavn N86 KOONOONA is no different as she recently “cut her bow” on the South China Sea from Xiamen, China, to Singapore with a stop in Hong Kong. However, this 1,850-nm trip hardly touches her 4,000 maximum range (at 9 knots)! A previous Nordhavn 62’ buyer from Asia, her owner will keep her in Indonesia making her the first Indonesian-based Nordhavn.

KOONOONA is the 10th hull of the N86, which initially was the flagship and Nordhavn’s solid entry into the megayacht market, a step up from the 76’ at the time. She boasts a beam of 24’, and her full load displacement of over 400,000 lbs. puts her in with the big boys well over 100’. However, she still handles like a smaller vessel. In the N86, Nordhavn has applied the “form follows function” rule with an aft wheelhouse configuration that allows for comfort, great visibility and a long foredeck to accommodate tenders up to 20’. With allowances for customization, owners often opt for their own professional interior designers which means that no two Nordhavns are alike.

The interior volume is noteworthy on a vessel this size—the saloon and galley measure 36’ forward of the salon and galley, the master cabin and head are full beam and spacious, and the wheelhouse, captain’s cabin and sky lounge measure almost 30’ in length. Other accommodations are provided in three ensuite staterooms and additional crew cabin. To handle that non-stop laundry at sea, a laundry and utility area have been well thought out with multiple washers, dryers and freezers. Interiors are sumptuous yet comfortable and functional with touches of fine hardwoods, exquisite moldings, raised panels with stone floors, granite counters and top-of-the-line hardware, lighting and fixtures.

Down in the engine room, it’s all business. Standard twin MTU Series 60 engines rated at 600hp each push the Nordhavn N86 to cruise at about 10 knots efficiently and reliably and as high as 12.8 knots. Her max draft is 8’2”.

The Nordhavn N86 can be built to ABS certification with +A1 Yachting Service rating for her hull and AMS rating for machinery and installation. She is constructed in fiberglass and finished with a highly detailed gelcoat and complete Alexseal paint job. The list of standards is endless: central hydraulics with stabilizers, bow and stern thrusters, 3,500 lb. Marquipt davit, 2,000 gallons/day watermaker and on deck Jacuzzi.

Headquartered in Dana Point, Calif., but with a factory in Xiamen, China, Nordhavn, formerly known as Pacific Asian Enterprises, has been a successful partnership since the ‘70s between Jim Leishman, Dan Streech, and Joe Meglen. Beginning with a 43’ sailboat, the trio launched powerboats in the late ‘80s with a 46’. With the heavy luxury tax in the early ‘90s, the group was forced to go international with their business. They’ve made a name for themselves in bluewater cruising trawlers capable of global passages—with an owner operator. The flagship of the fleet is currently the Nordhavn 120.
