Ocean Alexander recently announced the sale of four new builds for the U.S.— a new Ocean Alexander 72 and three new 90 Motoryachts. The 72 is going to new, first time Ocean Alexander owners who anticipate delivery in the first quarter of 2015. They were taken with the quality and customization that Ocean Alexander offered after extensive research and current owner interviews. The first 90 Motoryacht sold to a sea-going family that particularly liked the openness in the main salon thanks to the enlarged windows, the sumptuous accommodations and entertainment options on the open flybridge. The next 90 Motoyacht with enclosed skylounge sold at the Palm Beach International Boat Show to a current Ocean Alexander owner who was considering a jump up from his 85 to an 88, but in the end decided for the extra space the 90 gave and the protection the enclosed skylounge provided from South Florida’s sometimes quickly changing weather. The final Ocean Alexander 90 sold at the Newport Boat Show and also featured an enclosed skylounge. Delivery is expected over the summer—watch for the new exterior window profile design by Evan K. Marshall and new interior updates.
After about a dozen successful launches, Ocean Alexander began making design changes on the 90 that end up benefiting both owners and crew. The revisions reflect Ocean Alexander’s focus on refinement, hydrodynamic science, naval design, craftsmanship, comfort and state-of-the-art technology. In the freshened 90, Evan K. Marshall brought decorative elements from the 120 into her shorter sister (including the stonework with stainless steel inserts in granite in the master bath) and adjusted crew and guest movement starboard for better flow. Exquisite woods usually found just in guest quarters have been brought into the ergonomically upgraded helm station. He also popped in a dinette immediately to port for crew or guest use. Owners are taking advantage of varying options for an open flybridge with a hard top or enclosed bridge configuration depending on their entertainment and lounging needs. Crew will love the dedicated laundry room with hideaway ironing board. Even the little things in the turnkey inclusions have been upgraded—a 15’ tender, glassware, spare parts and more.
While Ocean Alexander has made quite a few modifications, they’ve retained those dramatic, oversized main salon windows that enhance the 90’s 22.5’ beam. Buyers are still appreciating the flexibility in accommodations—either a three- or four-stateroom layout below decks. The country galley that opens to the helm and dinette is also popular, especially the casual barstools that service the counter. The full-beam king master features a dramatic double-door with marble inlay entry. Exquisite accents include sapele wood (an incredibly strong hardwood native to Africa that’s less affected by water than other woods) and burlwood cabinetry.
Twin 1,622-hp C32 ACERT Caterpillar engines top the Ocean Alexander 90 at just over 20 knots (380-nm range) and allow for cruising at 10 knots (3,300-nm range). She draws between 5.5’ and 6.5’. Unique to this range size, the Portuguese bridge allows for access completely around the pilothouse exterior.
The Ocean Alexander 72 is quite beamy for her size at almost 19’ giving guests some more breathing room while living and moving around the vessel. A modern hull, more living options, fuel efficiencies, superb engineering, safety and performance are the 72’s key bragging points. Exotic woods are also used in the 72, masterfully worked and installed. The full-beam master amidships features options like a private staircase from the salon and massive shower or whirlpool tub in the master bath. Guests in the two additional staterooms (double and twin) enjoy ensuite baths. The Ocean Alexander 72 reaches the finest ports in the world thanks to her twin Caterpillar turbo diesel engines rated at 1,150hp each. However, we’ve also seen a twin MTU 8V-2000 1250hp configuration. She draws about 5’.

Two generations of one family over the past 35 years have guided Ocean Alexander’s manufacturing operations in Kaoshiung, Taiwan; China and in the US. In a big announcement last year, Ocean Alexander expressed an intent to expand their Taiwan-based manufacturing facility to meet an increased demand for larger-sized yachts. They furthermore stated that they would close their China-based yard and consolidate experienced personnel into just one yard. Construction to double the current capacity will be complete sometime next year (2015). Ocean Alexander said that their building capacity will subsequently expand from up to 12 yachts in the 72’ to 90’ range per year to 25 per year up to 112’.
