U.S. Coast Guard Mobile – The first priority of any boat owner should be his or her own safety or that of his or her passengers. That is why topping our list of apps is the U.S. Coast Guard Mobile App. This app was developed by the U.S. Coast Guard. It can help you keep and maintain a checklist of all the safety and emergency gear you should have on board your vessel, show you how to file a float plan, or how to request a safety check, it lists your state’s boating rules and regulations, and so much more!
Navionics – Navionics is one of the first, and still most popular navigation apps. The recent addition of SonarChart Live makes this perennial favorite an even more powerful tool. If your sounder has Wi-Fi, you can stream data from the sounder to your phone or tablet and add your own, personal, and up-to-date HD bottom contours on your chart saved to your device, so it’s accessible the next time.
Boater’s Pocket Reference – This is really a great app, particularly for newer yacht owners. It is like having an entire nautical encyclopedia at your fingertips. Need to know what a particular sound signal means, how to distinguish a ketch from a yawl, or what’s the best way to set an anchor? All this, and more, is displayed in a simple, logical, and easy-to-understand format.
IGFA Mobile – If fishing is your thing, then this app is for you! This app allows you to check on the record status of any species of game fish caught in the world in real time. It also includes a list of International Game Fish Association-certified weigh stations so you can find the closest scales to check in your catch. Plus, there’s a trip-planning list and complete IGFA rules.
GoSkyWatch – Some apps are essential for safety or navigation, others are just plain fun! Nothing beats the view of the stars out on the open water, and if you would like to do more than just gaze and dream, GoSkyWatch helps you to identify those heavenly bodies. Simply point your phone or tablet at the sky, and it will identify the visible stars and planets.
