Drones are becoming increasingly popular among hobbyists. So it was only a matter of time, until someone figured out how to combine RC flying with water sports to come up with an ultimate water toy. They have — and it’s called “Drone Surfing.”
The new extreme water sport basically puts a high-tech spin on kite surfing, replacing the kite with a powerful drone. Instead of holding onto a rope attached to a widn born kite, a drone is used for towing power. The benefit? The same one a motor yacht has over a sailing yacht – you are no longer at the mercy of the winds. Drone surfing can be done on any body of water, even on the calmest of days.
Not Just Any Drone
Of course you cannot use just any drone for Drone Surfing. You need one that is powerful enough to get the job done. That means it’s not going to be the kind you typically find in the hobby aisle at Target.
Drone Surfing joins a growing list of yacht charter “add-ons” such as the Flyboard and the Flying Inflatables that are taking water toys to new heights! Freefly Systems, one of the developers of the sport, uses an Alta 8 model which was originally developed for professional use on film sets and can deadlift over 20 pounds. This flying workhorse costs close to $18,000, which makes drone surfing the kind of unique water toy ideal for luxury yacht charters.
