What Kind of Boat Should You Choose for Your Luxury Charter Yacht?

Posted by at 27 April, at 15 : 55 PM Print

You have decided to make the vacation of a lifetime a reality by booking a private yacht charter. Congratulations, you are about to embark on an unforgettable experience!

But, there is more to choosing a motor yacht charter experience then just selecting your destination. Choosing the “wrong boat” could turn your vacation dream into a nightmare, before it even begins!

So just what makes for the “right” charter yacht? Glad you asked!

Size and a Few Other Things Matter When You Charter a Yacht

Of course you need to consider size and style of the boat, and the amenities you desire, but more important than any of that will be the selection of your crew.  A skilled and experienced crew will not only provide a high-level of service, but will also be able to help you to make the most of your charter in every way. That includes: itinerary recommendations, how to enjoy the water toys, cuisine recommendations, and more. You should also expect your crew to be experts on, and well-travelled to, the region you’ll be going to, and to have a proven track record for safety, seamanship, and reliability.

On most long-term yacht charters, a good crew will ask you to fill out a preference sheet, where you can detail your food & activity preferences. This way they will be aware of your expectations before the charter even begins.

Beyond the quality of the crew, you should look for:

  • Sufficient space, and a comfortable design – Your long-term charter yacht should not only have a good number of cabins and enough public space, but the best charter yachts are laid out in a way that affords guests maximum privacy from the crew.
  • Water toys – Most people on a charter vacation want to at least have the option to enjoy jet skiing, wakeboarding, waterslides or one of the new/more exotic water toys.
  • A Flybridge – All things being equal, a large flybridge is a great asset for a charter yacht.
  • Satellite TV/Internet capability – Even on vacation, everyone, especially the types of people on a yacht charter, want to be able to stay “connected.”
  • A well-maintained yacht – Nothing ruins a charter like a mechanical breakdown. Of course, it’s a boat and there will always be some hiccups, but serious issues can flat out ruin a charter.
  • A yacht that is right for WHERE you want to go – You need a yacht that is properly designed to make port in, or safely navigate the waters, of your destination. For instance, a boat with a deep draft will have difficulty accessing many prime spots in the Bahamas.
  • Plenty of storage – both for things like luggage and cold storage for food

The Role of Your Charter Broker

A skilled and qualified charter broker can make sure any boat that you are considering chartering, meets the above the criteria, and then some! The role of the charter broker is to get to know you, evaluate your needs and desires, and match you with the boat, the crew, and the itinerary that is just right for you.

Once you have made the decision to try a charter yacht vacation, there can be dozens of boats and itineraries to choose from. A good charter broker from a reputable charter company will offer you sound and unbiased advice, and would never risk compromising your experience, or his or her reputation, by recommending anything less than the very best!
