Headquartered in Avigliana, Torino, Italy, Azimut Yachts is truly global, serving customers in over 130 sites worldwide. Azimut Yachts was founded in 1969 by Paolo Vitelli and rapidly developed a solid reputation in the pleasure boating niche. In 1985, Azimut took over Benetti Brothers, known for their classic lines and luxurious yachting interiors and strategically launched about 60 different yacht models over the next two decades.
The Azimut Flybridge Collection offers an extensive range of innovative models from the Azimut 40 to the Azimut 100 Leonardo. One of their latest is the Azimut 72.
The Azimut 72
The Azimut 72 has a feel akin to some of her larger cousins such as an Azimut 85. The 72’s main deck offers a seating area with almost 140 square feet of just “kick-back-and-relax” space. It has a portside C-shaped sofa and settee across from it that can easily seat 8 people comfortably for drinks and conversation. It is surprisingly roomy for a vessel that has only an 18-foot-3-inch beam.
According to the manufacturer, they were able to achieve that kind of interior space by leveraging their unique vacuum-infused fiberglass build for the hull, deck, deckhouse and trays. Azimut has been using vacuum infusion since 2008 for smaller parts, but its use has been expanded to much larger parts, such as, this 72’s hull. Doing so lets the builder use less material and sets the trays lower, enhancing overall headroom throughout the yacht.
The result? The 72 may only be 4 feet longer than the older model Azimut 70, but has 25 percent more volume. Headroom in the 72’s salon is a measurable 6 feet 10 inches!
There are other less immediately noticeable changes over older models as well, that were also designed to give the feel of more volume, such as the salon sofa’s lower armrests, which add to the sense of openness and height.
According to the designer of the Azimut 72, Stefano Righini, “the New 72 has been designed by researching and fulfilling certain specific objectives: achieving the greatest possible internal volume in keeping with ergonomic standards, emphasizing the role of light both in the main salon and belowdecks layout, without sacrificing the enjoyment of exterior spaces. The strength of the 72 lies in its capacity to marry a balanced form with the kind of style and research that guarantee the best relationship between design of the exterior and the enjoyment of the internal spaces.”
The Azimut 72 is also well suited for family yachting, or would probably be a good choice if you are considering a vessel for charter income. She sports four copious staterooms. A full-beam master bedroom amidships with elongated, rectangular windows flanking the king-size berth and luxurious white-leather headboard. From a practical perspective, the headboard and closet to the rear of the berth provide an impressive sound barrier from the engine room, meaning that practically the only thing you will hear is the relaxing sounds of the sea, as you drift off to sleep!
