Winners of World Superyacht Awards 2017 Announced

The World Superyacht Awards 2017 were recently announced. The annual awards ceremony took place earlier this month at the Palazzo Vecchio, in the beautiful city of Florence.

This is the 12th year of the awards that are given in recognition of exceptional innovation in yachting design, engineering and construction. The most prestigious stakeholders of the superyacht world, came together in Italy to recognize the finest superyachts launched throughout 2016.

According to Boat International Media, one of the organizers of the event, “This year saw 60 nominations from 14 countries, with 15 winners recognized for their outstanding ingenuity, innovation and quality of design.”

Luxury Motor Yacht of The Year

This year, nine motor yachts – the winners of each of the motor yacht classes – competed for the coveted title of Motor Yacht of the Year. The coveted title this year went to Dilbar. According to the Judges, [Dilbar], was arguably the most complex and challenging yacht ever to be built, but she is also the largest ever built in terms of gross tonnage. All aspects of her design and construction were quite superb. The quality of construction of her interior, which uses rare materials and striking surface finishes in abundance, is truly spectacular, as is the indoor swimming pool with a capacity of [almost 600 cubic feet], the largest ever installed on a yacht.”

The other major award for motor yachts is the Voyager Award, which honors the most far-flung and adventurous trip made by motor yacht. The winner, from a field of three nominees went to a remarkable cruise made by the 160 foot superyacht, Glaze, which is currently engaged on a world circumnavigation voyage by her owners and their young family. The element of this cruise submitted to the jury was in North West Australia, between Wyndham and Broome, where they visited the remote, spectacular and extremely rugged coastline known as The Kimberleys. They took the yacht through unchartered inlets and rivers, allowing to her to dip her bow in waterfalls that were tumbling down the vertical red cliffs and battle whirlpools and rapids. The voyage included encounters with many sharks and crocodiles, as well as visits to Aboriginal cave art, and even the well-preserved remains of a DC3 aircraft downed in WWII.

Among other notable highlights, the ‘Legacy Award’ went to Alex Dreyfoos, and the Refit of the year was awarded to the superyacht Aquila.

Dreyfoos is an MIT and Harvard graduate, who is a keen scuba diver as well as an Oscar-winner for his technical contribution to film. Dreyfoos created a variety of hull-forms that would help limit motion sickness and discovered the SWATH (small waterplane area twin hull) concept.

Aquila, formerly the yacht known as Cakewalk, received the Refit Award because according to the Judges, “Her 12 month transformation, which was undertaken by Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, England, with interior design and decoration by RWD and Susan Young Interiors was, carried out to exemplary standards, with the results fully meeting the owner’s expectations and more.”
