The high-tech European outfit was engaged early on by Zeelander in the design and manufacturing phases to reach the highest levels of noise cancellation by carefully balancing and implementing maximum sound insulation around the integral fuel tanks, full beam lateral bulkheads and elsewhere.

CHASING ZERO DEFECT

ONBOARD A ZEELANDER

Specifically, the Zeelander 44, Zeelander 55 and Zeelander 68, are fully equipped with silent generators, air-conditioning, ovens, fridges, icemakers, extractors, dishwashers, computers and state of the art entertainment systems.

PERSPECTIVE

“The perspective of our sound and vibration specialists is to check the vibration behavior of the construction during the yacht’s design phase. Construction parts are modeled in finite element (FE) software and analyzed,” said Zeelander Consultancy.

ENERGY TRANSFER

The group carefully monitors the transfer of acoustic energy from machinery to the Zeelander superstructure since the less energy transmitted results in less available energy for noise radiation into the luxury interior spaces.

NATURAL FREQUENCY

According to Zeelander, their engineering teams prefer to calculate natural frequency using Finite Element methods (FEM), than using simplistic formulas, as FEM facilitates the analysis of complex geometries, orthotropic materials (e.g. composites), etc. and of structural modifications, such as material thickness and the addition of stiffeners or frames. Effective assessment of such structural measures is performed using FEM.

STATISTICAL ENERGY ANALYSIS

“Using FEM, the input mobility of a foundation can already be calculated during the early design stage.” Another extremely important component in their initial scoping and design phases, is the use of modern vibro-acoustic noise level prediction tools based on something called Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA).

PREDICTION TOOLS

SEA is a prediction tool for noise and vibration analysis, simulating a yacht’s noise and vibration environment during the design process. SEA is based on the principle of energy conservation: all energy put into a system (by means of mechanical or acoustic excitation) must leave the system through structural damping or radiation of sound and vibration.

SILENCE IN 3D

Zeelander said the virtual 3D tools predict overall noise levels within 3 dB(A) for all areas onboard. The technology was instrumental in making the Zeelander brand one of the quietest luxury sports cruisers on the market, allowing friends and family to hold normal conversations at sea without shouting to be heard over the engine noise.
