Azimut enthusiasts, pop those corks! Azimut Yachts recently completed a 36-meter (116’6”) Azimut Grande 120SL, currently en route from Viareggio, Italy, to Hong Kong to her new owner. ‘SL’ in Azimut-speak means ‘sport luxury’, and she’s the flagship of the Azimut Grande series. The ‘SL’ denotes the balance of performance, agility, luxurious comfort and semi-customization.
Exterior design comes courtesy of Stefano Righini and interiors by Carlo Galeazzi. The Azimut Grande 120SL was named ‘Best Motor Yacht Over 30m’ in the 2013 Hurun Best of the Best awards in China earlier this year. In the Azimut Grande 120SL, Azimut has striven to strip away the age-old boundary between the natural environment of the sea and a yacht’s protective and fortified interiors.
Her aft deck is flexible, accommodating a variety of uses such as sunbathing on large sunbeds, happy hours, dining al fresco for up to eight guests and overall lounging. A bar placed aft blurs the lines of interior/exterior boundaries as it can aptly service those in the main saloon and aft deck. Spaciousness, lightness and airiness are evident throughout the luxury motoryacht Azimut Grande 120SL thanks in part to a large piece of the saloon roof (172 square feet) that can be opened over the dining arrangement and the large, stylish curved windows (538 square feet) that bathe the salon in natural light. The openness and light, earthy colors in the interiors complement the darker woods. Overall, the layout of the main deck allows for the combination of an open area of more than 320 square feet—perfect for entertaining. Forward, there are more spaces for lounging, including a U-shaped seating configuration and more sunbeds with unobstructed, expansive views. Up on the flybridge that contains a helm station, guests can enjoy the Jacuzzi or more relaxation choices.
The Azimut Grande 120SL allows for either a four- or five-cabin layout on the lower deck. The owner’s suite (which includes his/hers bathrooms) is also graced with large windows allowing for more natural light than is customary in many motoryachts. Key design elements include Zebrano wood paneling, cream carpets, glass tables and reflective mirrors. All guest cabins are en suite with generously-sized showers and a closet.
A swim platform allows for easy access to the water, and a pair of personal watercraft and 18-foot tender launched by mechanical crane easily fit in the garage. She’s a serious performer as a planing yacht, outfitted with 3 x MTU 16V 2000M93’s (with Rolls-Royce water jet propulsion) rated at 1790kW at 2450 rpms. With this configuration, expect max speed of about 36 knots and cruising speed of about 23.5 knots. Her beam measures 25’1” and her draft to keel at full load is 4’7”.
Parent company Azimut Benetti prides itself on being the world’s largest private group in the yachting sector. The group notes that not only does this allow for economic and financial strength, but the group is free to reinvest profits in production without regard to shareholders, funds or parent companies.
Azimut is not currently on the 26 North Yachts Top Builder List, however offerings such as the Azimut Grande 120SL will certainly capture our attention as experts in the 70’ to 140’ luxury motoryacht range. Signs point to Azimut expanding more into our specialty range, and we’ll continue to closely watch their endeavors.
