About Outer Reef Yachts
Launching his first Outer Reef Yacht in the early 2000s, owner Jeff Druek built his first clamming boat when he was 13 on Long Island, New York. He eventually transitioned into the commercial fishing industry and then founded a construction company in the Hamptons. With an affinity for trawlers, he built his first in the late ‘90s with a yard in Taiwan and found that his expertise honed from years working on custom homes transferred easily into yachts.
Outer Reefs today are built by Tania Yacht Company in Taiwan with the goals of reliability, comfort, safety, ease of handling, minimal maintenance, and easy navigability by an experienced couple. Outer Reef is constantly and proactively improving its offerings, gleaned from their own research and client suggestions. Outer Reefs are built to open ocean, category A standards, unrestricted navigation, and the shipyard is ISO 9001 certified. Outer Reef recently brought on Ken Freivokh, designer of famed “Maltese Facon,” to design a more contemporary interior for their trawler yachts, increasing their appeal to the European market and improving the delicate combination of luxury and safety. Some semi-customization of interiors can be accommodated at no extra cost.
Outer Reefs are manufactured using only three major molds ensuring watertight integrity and maximum rigidity. In addition, Outer Reefs stay in this mold for an extended period of time until interior components are installed and fiberglassed into place. Outer Reef considers the little details that make a big impact, for instance all water that collects on the deck goes directly to gutters that drain to through hull fittings at the waterline, preventing unattractive black streaks on a pristine vessel. In addition, all mechanical equipment is soft-mounted in the hull to minimize vibration and noise.
Outer Reef features four series: MotorYacht (580, 630, 650, 700, 730, 800, 860), Cockpit (630, 720, and 860), Tri-Deck (105 and 115), and the full displacement Expedition 118. The Outer Reef 700 MotorYacht (actually 71 feet, 6 inches) feels much bigger than her size. She’s easily able to accommodate a 20-foot tender on the boat deck, and her outdoor entertainment area includes dual settees with tables, sink, grill, refrigerator and generous storage. In addition, Outer Reef Yachts is introducing the Outer Reef 720 Deluxbridge Long Range Motoryacht (LRM) with an enclosed pilothouse and lounge with port and starboard wing stations, replacing the traditional open flybridge, allowing for a large country kitchen on the main deck.
