A New Flagship Motor Yacht Project From Westport Yachts
Since 1964, Westport Yachts has been a pioneer in composite construction. Today, Westport Yachts is one of the largest and most popular producers of 85 to164-foot fiberglass luxury motor yachts.
Last year, the Washington State based yacht builder launched what was at that time, the latest addition to its superyacht lineup, The Westport 125. Since its launch, and debut at the 2016 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the Westport 125 has been turning heads and achieving rave reviews, everywhere the model is seen
Not to rest on their laurels, this year Westport has announced another new addition to their fleet, opening up to the press about details of their new superyacht project, the W65. The W65 will be a 215 foot luxury motor yacht, which is going to be built from a steel displacement hull. While the yacht will be well over 200 feet, and the largest hull to be built to date by the American yacht maker, it draws its name from its overall length in meters. The W65 joins Westport’s “next generation” fleet, which includes a completely refreshed Westport 112, and the aforementioned Westport 125.
Speaking about the new project at the recent 2017 edition of the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, Westport’s director of sales, Alex Rogers told Boat International, “We’ve worked with a repeat client who is probably going to take hull number one. It’s going to have great deck areas.”
More About the New Westport Luxury Motor Yacht
While traditionally known as a builder of fiberglass and composite yachts, Westport says that it went with the steel hull because metal hulls dominate the market for yachts in this size range. Most superyachts over 200 feet are steel, versus aluminum. Plus, Westport has the unique ability to pair the W65’s steel hull with the composite superstructures they are known for. They can do this by calling upon the expertise in steel construction, of their parent partner, Edison Chouest Offshore, which has extensive experience with steel hulls.
Like the Westport 125, the W65 is planned as a series. According to the manufacturer, three interior design configurations are available in the series thus far. Regardless of the configuration, again speaking with Boat, Rogers said that, “Key features will include a foredeck water toy storage area, leaving the transom free for a fully-fledged superyacht beach club.”
