Aquarius – The World’s Premier Wooden Superyacht
When you hear the word “superyacht,” most people probably think of enormous marvels of glass and steel, or ships built of ultra-modern technologies, such as aluminum composites or carbon fiber.
To be sure, there are hundreds of superyachts that fit those descriptions, but there is also something to be said about the age-old craftsmanship and aesthetic magic of a wooden yacht.
Aquarius is a 147 foot superyacht that combines the epitome of modern technologies, with the time-honored artistry of wooden ship building. While wooden sailing yachts of similar size are not unusual, Aquarius is rather unique for being one of the world’s few large-scale luxury motor yachts to be built entirely of wood!
Aquarius was launched in 2016, and was built by Turkish yacht maker Mengi-Yay. Turkey is the leading exporter of modern wooden megayachts. Aquarius sports a stylish modern exterior created by Oğuzhan Güler, with an almost vertical prow, which belies the fact that both the hull and superstructure were built from cold-molded, epoxy-laminated timber.
She was custom built for an unnamed British owner, with a reported price tag of about $19 million. The project took Mengi-Yay 18 months to complete. In statements to the press, Bahadir Sen of Mengi-Yay said, “We don’t hesitate to use wood because it gives us the ability to make rapid changes in ongoing projects. Wood is more flexible than steel. Also laminated wood is more durable than fiber reinforced plastic, and glass reinforced plastic and [has a durability] close to steel.”
Other Features of This Remarkable Wooden Yacht
At first glance, Aquarius may look like any other upscale superyacht, however, this tri-decked yacht’s internal frames and beams are made of sapelli and mahogany, while the rest of the boat is made out of plywood. The outer shell has been laminated and painted.
The extravagant yacht has a master suite with a bathroom, office and dressing room, which takes up an entire floor. In addition to her distinctive wooden decking and wall treatments throughout, there are four guest cabins, a captain’s cabin and three crew cabins, as well as a spa, gym, and a beach club.
Powered by a pair of 1,450hp CAT C32 engines, Aquarius can make a top speed of nearly 17 knots.
There are only a handful of shipbuilders who build wooden yachts of the scale of Aquarius, which is thought to be the largest wooden superyacht built to date.
