British Royals Vacation on Superyacht
When you want to vacation like royalty, what do you do? Charter a luxury motor yacht of course! It seems that is also the case if you are royalty! But, if you are Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, his wife Camilla Parker Bowles, not just any yacht will do, it must be a superyacht. The royal copy was recently seen boarding the superyacht OKTO, which is owned by the Greek multi-millionaire and shipping magnet Theodore Angelopoulos.
According to the British press, The Prince and Duchess, arrived in Greece on August 2nd, for some R&R after their annual tour of the UK, where they visited quaint tea and cake rooms, sampled some local ale during a trip to a brewery, and even went out to sea with some local fishermen. However, they soon traded Scottish fishing boats for something more befitting the future King.
Photographs published in the Daily Mail, and several other UK newspapers, show a fleet of staff lining up to greet the royal couple as they boarded the floating palace, which is currently moored in a Corfu harbor.
OKTO is 216 feet in length, and boasts over 260 square feet of open deck, which includes space for dining, an enormous discotheque for dancing, a full-sized cinema, and a swimming pool with lights to change the color of the water. She also sports a gym on the top deck and a formal dining room that is fit for a king, or in this case a prince!
OKTO was built in 2014 and accommodates 11 guests plus 17 crew. She is valued at approximately 63 million USD.
Angelopoulos developed the steel industry in Greece and became a major shipping magnate in the process. The family owns the Dutch shipbuilding company Oceanco, which has also built several other boats and yachts for the man himself. He also owns one of the world’s leading oil tanker operations. Theo’s wife, Gianna, who greeted the royals with her tycoon husband as they arrived, has previously been named among the world’s 50 most powerful women by Forbes magazine, and is said to have supported Prince Charles’ charities in the past.
Greece Is the Word
It is no surprise that Prince Charles chose a superyacht moored off of the exotic Greek Isle of Corfu. The heir to the throne and the Duchess have spent other summer holidays on the mainland of the Greek island, staying in the villa of the well-known banking family the Rothschilds, where it is known that Princess Diana had also often spent her holidays.
But for Prince Charles, Corfu is more than just a charter yacht destination, his father Philip, the now retired 96 year old husband of Queen Elizabeth II, was born there on June 10, 1921.
