Burger Launches a New Superyacht
The Burger Boat Company is one of the world’s oldest and most respected shipyards. Burger’s craftsmen have built hundreds of high quality vessels which can be found in ports all over the world, including yachts, sailing ships, military vessels and steamers.
Headquartered in Manitowoc, WI, Burger has not only supported the area’s economy for over 150 years, it has set the standard for American yacht builders. On November 2nd, Burger launched a new superyacht, from that very same Manitowoc shipyard where it all began in 1863.
As quoted in the local newspaper, the Milwaukee Business Journal, Ron Cleveringa, Burger’s vice president of sales and marketing, said, “The yacht, is a 103-foot steel and aluminum expedition-style motor yacht. It is our first steel-hulled yacht since 1963, and is the first steel and aluminum yacht built by Burger. He went on to call this latest member of the Burger fleet a “unique product.” “It shows our broad capability to build what you’re looking for,” he said.
The yacht has been christened, Northland, and she is to be delivered to an undisclosed client in the Midwest. Cleveringa also would not reveal her sales price. He did say that like all Burger yachts she is “one of a kind,” built to the owner’s exact specifications.
“It’s exactly what that particular owner wanted,” Cleveringa. “It meets their specific requirements. You will never see another boat like this one in the world.”
What we do know is that the new Burger yacht was designed by Miami designer Luiz De Basto, who runs international yacht design firm De Basto Designs, and that she will soon undergo dock trials and “rigorous sea trials” in Lake Michigan before launching on her “departure voyage” to be delivered to her new owner.
Would You Prefer a Classic American Motor Yacht?
We are very pleased to report that venerable American yacht maker, Burger Boats is still going strong, and launching new models. Northland certainly represents the very best in modern shipbuilding design and technique. However, if you would prefer to experience a true Burger classic, why not check out Checkmate?
Checkmate was originally built in 1999. But do not let that fool you. Rather than showing any signs of age, she stands as a testament to lasting luxury and performance.
As her current owner puts it, “Checkmate is a wonderful yacht that has given our family and friends memories that will last a lifetime. We are constantly told how special she is, and people who know Burgers tell us she is one of the best motor yachts of her size ever built. We have to agree. Our only hope is that the next owner has as much fun, excitement, and joy as we have had.”
Checkmate is not only a living legacy to the halcyon days of American yacht building, she is currently the only fully modernized 85 foot Burger on the market.
“A high quality, dependable yacht”
Checkmate’s current captain, Bob Clark, a private yacht captain for over 16 years, says that Checkmate is a “very high quality, dependable, yet versatile yacht.” He adds, “I have been captain aboard Checkmate since July 2014. This is the third Burger Yacht I have captained, and I can tell you, they are great boats at sea. I have captained other makes and models, and by comparison, Checkmate is definitely one of the best yachts that I have had the pleasure of being aboard. She is well built with great systems. Her cruising range is a real plus. We’ve taken her nonstop, from Palm Beach to St Thomas, or Palm Beach to Long Island Sound, with plenty of fuel still in reserve.”
Bob says that while her range is a major selling point, she is also great all around, and her current owners have enjoyed cruising the Caribbean, the Bahamas, South Florida, Chesapeake Bay, Long Island Sound, and New England. “She is truly a versatile yacht, capable of just about any activity an owner could want.”

Timeless Quality with Modern Upgrades
The venerable style and quality of Checkmate cannot be denied. However, her current owners have also spared no expense to modernize her, making her truly unique in her class. “When we bought Checkmate, the flybridge wasn’t optimal for year round enjoyment or elegant entertaining. So, we redid the configuration and now have comfortable seating areas for more than a dozen people that are protected from the wind and the elements, but still provide the feeling of being outdoors on the water. The hardtop has a new large color television that folds down when we want it, and we updated the sound system on the flybridge and throughout Checkmate.”
They also added an oversized sun pad on the bow. “We love to sit on the bow while we pull into a new port, or to watch the sunset at the end of another spectacular day of kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming off the swim platform, exploring a new island, or just relaxing aboard.”
Overall this is just a spectacular boat. “There is something special about owning a Burger. Because of their aluminum construction, they are built to last over half a century. There are still many Burgers built in the 1960s that are giving their owners great pleasure. When we see one in our travels, we feel like we are members together of a special club…” said her current owners.
The thing about classics is that they never go out of style, and right now there is no better time to check-out, Checkmate!
