Dale Earnhardt Sr. had a NASCAR career like few others. His most thrilling victory came in 1998, when, at the age of 47, Earnhardt won the Daytona 500. Tragically, just three years later, that legendary race would also be the cause of his untimely death. Rounding the final lap of the now-infamous 2001 Daytona 500, Earnhardt was in 3rd place – when, at 180 mph, he grazed one car and then fully collided with another, causing him to careen head-on into the outside retaining wall. He was killed on impact. Dale Earnhardt Jr., unaware of the crash that had just taken his father’s life, finished in 2nd place.

At that moment in time, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was in the midst of building the yacht of his dreams – but, like Steve Jobs, he would not live to see her to completion. That dream yacht, a 2001 100′ Hatteras, has just hit the market at an asking price of $4.2 million. She appears to be in excellent shape, having undergone a full interior, exterior and mechanical refit in 2012. Her electronics, teak and other areas have been updated far more recently.

Hints of the man who commissioned her are still there too – from the letter “D”, written in cursive, found throughout the yacht, to the black #3 Earnhardt flag flying on the bow. Yet it’s the name of this Hatteras that is perhaps the truest indication of the man who built her – SUNDAY MONEY. After all, as the winner of 76 Winston Cup races, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was a man who knew a thing or two about picking up a big check on race day.
