Escape to Placencia Belize and Experience Naia Resort & Spa

by Allison Helfen

As someone who craves a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, my recent trip to Placencia, Belize, exceeded all expectations. Staying at the Naia Resort and Spa was a dream, and I can see why it was just named Hotel of the Year by the Belize Tourism Board. If you’re considering a trip to this tropical paradise, here’s a glimpse into my unforgettable experience.

Getting There

Our journey began with a smooth flight from Miami to Belize City. From there, we hopped on a short Maya Air flight to Placencia, which offers stunning views of Belize’s coastline and emerald waters. As soon as we landed, the laid-back vibes of Placencia welcomed us with open arms.

Naia Resort and Spa: A Haven of Tranquility

Nestled along the serene beaches of the Placencia Peninsula, Naia Resort and Spa is a true gem. The resort’s luxurious accommodations are a perfect blend of comfort and elegance, with each beachside villa offering stunning ocean views. Waking up to the sound of waves gently lapping the shore was a daily reminder that I was in paradise.

Naia Resort and Spa offers a range of accommodations designed to suit every traveler’s needs. Whether you choose a beachfront studio or a spacious rental house, you’ll find yourself surrounded by comfort and luxury. The resort also caters to business travelers with well-equipped conference facilities that blend work and leisure seamlessly.

Dining at Naia is an experience in itself. Their upscale restaurant, 1981, offers some of the finest cuisine in Belize, with a menu that celebrates local ingredients and culinary creativity. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely breakfast or an elegant dinner, the food and beverage options are outstanding. During the day, the poolside service is impeccable, with friendly staff always ready to ensure your needs are met as you relax under the Belizean sun. From the stunning beachfront views to the warm hospitality, every aspect of Naia is designed to offer a truly memorable stay.

The resort boasts an array of amenities, including a world-class spa, where I treated myself to a full-body massage that left me feeling rejuvenated and utterly relaxed. The spa, set within a tranquil lagoon, is a sanctuary of peace and offers a variety of treatments designed to soothe the body and mind. In addition to the spa, the resort features a beautiful yoga studio and fitness center.

Adventures in Placencia

While Naia is the perfect place to unwind, Placencia offers plenty of opportunities for adventure. We spent half a day exploring Placencia Village, where we met local vendors and shopped for unique handcrafted souvenirs. The village has a charming, laid-back atmosphere, and it was a joy to interact with the friendly locals.

One of the highlights of our trip was snorkeling at Silk Caye, located about 21 miles offshore. The vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life made it an unforgettable experience. We saw everything from colorful fish to graceful rays and even a few playful turtles. It’s a must-do for any nature lover.

If you didn’t know, Placencia is a gateway to some of the most breathtaking dive and snorkel spots in Belize. Beyond Silk Caye, the region is home to one of the largest barrier reefs in the world, where the Blue Hole is located and several other renowned sites that attract marine enthusiasts from around the world.

Laughing Bird Caye National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must-visit, offering shallow waters teeming with vibrant coral gardens and an array of tropical fish.  For those seeking a more secluded experience, Ranguana Caye provides crystal-clear waters and a serene environment perfect for exploring Belize’s rich marine biodiversity. Each of these locations offers a unique glimpse into the underwater wonders of the Caribbean, making Placencia a diver’s paradise.

Beyond the Resort – Dining Delights

Placencia is also a food lover’s paradise. We celebrated my birthday with meals at two incredible restaurants: Mango’s and Hotel Maya Bistro. Mango’s is known for its delicious seafood, and the atmosphere is as warm as the Belizean sun. At Hotel Maya Bistro, we indulged in a mix of local and international flavors, each dish bursting with fresh ingredients and expertly prepared.

Though our stay was short, Placencia offers even more for the adventurous spirit. From the Monkey River Tour, where you can spot howler monkeys and exotic birds, to ziplining and tubing through lush rainforests, there’s no shortage of activities to keep you entertained. The resort’s concierge had a vast offering of activities available and they will take care of every detail.
