Fins Attached Postpones Launch of Research Vessel Sharkwater

It is with regret that we must join with Fins Attached in announcing a delay in the launch of the research yacht, Sharkwater, which was scheduled to coincide with World Ocean Day this Thursday, June 8th.

In an email sent out to all those who had been invited to, or had purchased tickets to the event, Fins Attached said:

It is with great dismay and our sincerest apologies that we must announce the delay of our christening event for the research vessel SHARKWATER. Scheduled initially for June 8, the Sharkwater has not yet been able to set sail from her current waypoint in the Dominican Republic, due to unforeseen circumstances.

Please excuse our delay in reporting this to you. We were holding out hope that we would still be able to get the vessel into port on time. Unfortunately that window has closed. As a result, we must reschedule the christening event. We are incredibly sorry for the tremendous inconvenience this will cause everyone who had planned on attending the event; we know many of you had purchased plane tickets to join us.

As soon as a new date is set, we will notify you all. For further information or questions please email info@finsattached.org.

As the yacht brokers who facilitated the purchase of the new research yacht for Fins Attached, we share in their sincere apologies, and will keep our readers informed as soon as we know when the event has been rescheduled, and when Sharkwater will be in the area and available for charters.

Sharkwater Research Motor Yacht

The yacht, which started its life as Senshu Maru, a Japanese fishing vessel, was converted and renamed Sharkwater, in honor of long time shark advocate and close associate of the Fins Attached, Rob Stewart, who recently died in a dive accident during the filming of the sequel to his award winning documentary of the same name.

The Mission of Fins Attached

The mission of Fins Attached is to protect and preserve endangered sea life, particularly sharks, many species of which are threatened, as these magnificent predators are stripped of their fins to satisfy the demand for shark-fin soup, a delicacy around the world. The shark is typically alive when their fins are cut off, and they are then tossed back into the ocean to die, hence the organization’s name, “Fins Attached.”

Gaining its own research expedition vessel for the first time will allow the nonprofit to expand its mission to research sharks, and to educate the scientific community and the lay public alike, about the vital role sharks play to the ecosystem, as the oceans apex predator.

As brokers of luxury motor yachts, it has always been part of the mission of 26 North Yachts to advocate for the conservation and the responsible use of our oceans and inland waterways. We encourage all yacht owners and charter yacht vacationers, to recognize their responsibility as stewards of the environment, and the vital role they can play in protecting the environment and preserving our world’s oceans. Even though this event is cancelled, we encourage anyone interested in boating, fishing or yachting, to still mark World Oceans Day, by seeking out other local events in your area.
