Lady Luck Intentionally Sunk to Make First Underwater “Casino”
South Florida dive enthusiasts just got lucky. On July 23, to much excitement and fanfare, the Lady Luck, a former tanker ship was scuttled off the coast of Pompano Beach. The sinking of the Lady Luck adds her to 16 other vessels that had previously been scuttled to create the artificial reef known as Shipwreck Park.
The sinking of the Lady Luck was a joint effort between the City of Pompano Beach, and the Isle Casino. The Isle’s sponsorship accounts for the change of name of the former NYC sludge tanker, to the casino themed, “Lady Luck.” The city and the casino are gambling that the latest addition to the popular artificial reef will draw more divers and tourists to the area.
According to the Sun Sentinel, city officials and the Isle had been planning this sinking for over a decade. It took time to raise funds and to find the right ship. Speaking to the Sun Sentinel, Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher, said, “This is a dream come true, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our city.” Lamar witnessed the sinking from one of the luxury yachts that the city had chartered to bring dignitaries and other officials to the site of the sinking, which is just one mile east of the popular Pompano Beach City Pier.
Before the sinking, the Lady Luck was cleaned and fitted with many whimsical casino themed sculptures and paintings, designed to attract sea life and divers!
At 324 feet, the former tanker gives divers a lot to explore. Based on Lady Luck’s sheer size, organizers expect it will take more than one dive experience to explore the entire underwater site and all of its artwork. Rob Wyre, vice chair of Shipwreck Park said, “Lady Luck is not the first to be sunk out there, but this probably will be the most iconic. She is going to attract visitors from around the world…”
