According to the New York Times, no fewer than 100 of the 500 exhibitors at the recent Monaco Boat Show represented “megasize” ships ranging from 25 meters to 90 meters, or 82 feet to 295 feet, in length.

And, this statistic is indirectly influenced by the surge in billionaires worldwide, despite the recent economic downtown.

“Forbes, which tracks the superrich, counted 1,210 billionaires in March this year, beating even the 1,125 counted in 2008, before the financial market crash plunged much of the world into recession,” said the New York Times.

The symbolic high point of these massive luxury yachts is represented by a 557-foot boat named Eclipse, which is so big that it often forced to anchor in the open seas since it cannot squeeze into the narrow entranceways offered by ports in Europe and elsewhere.

Some estimate the cost of building Eclipse to be around the $1.2 billion mark.

But, it’s not just the size of this sexy luxury vessel, which boggles the mind. It’s also the over-the-top extravagance or star-wars technology that accompanies the two helipads, two swimming pools and six-foot movie screens in all guest cabins.

For instance, Roman Abramovich, Russian billionaire and owner, installed an anti-paparazzi shield which uses lasers to sweep the surroundings and fire bolts of light at tabloid cameras to obliterate any photograph. Eclipse even has a missile defense system and employs about 70 staff full-time, including captain and crew. And, yes, it it does also have a mini-submarine!

However, many believe the massive size and opulence of these luxury yachts may have reached their zenith, at least in terms of size.

The practicality of owning, running and docking these monster vessels may lead big spenders to start using their cash to focus on technology, rather than size, as per Abramovich in the tech example above
