26 North Yachts developed the Top 10 Motoryacht Models as shorthand for buyers to identify the builders with a reputation for quality craftsmanship and timeless design. Now, No. 6 Benetti has been recognized for not only its quality but also its environmentally responsible yachts. Last week on the final day of the Monaco Yacht Show, the international classification and certification agency RINA awarded Benetti’s 180-foot (55-meter) Ocean Paradise the Green Plus award. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco was on hand to present the honor to Benetti CEO Vincenzo Poerio (below). RINA classifications are generally applied to charter vessels and recognizes a higher standard of environmental protections. The RINA Green Plus award is given to recently launched yachts with internal systems and equipment go beyond international environmental standards. Ocean Paradise was launched at Benetti’s Livorno yard in July 2013. Her owner, a businessman from Singapore, had very specific requests for the interior design as well as the technical systems, which contributed to the RINA recognition. Most of the modifications were aimed at reducing fuel consumption, always a consideration in yachting. First, Benetti added a new anti-fouling silicone to the hull to reduce water resistance and therefore fuel consumption. Substituting LED lights for conventional lights also reduced the consumption of electricity and, again, fuel. Finally, advanced refrigeration systems that can recapture some of the gas emitted were installed. To further reduce the consumption of electricity, there are full-height windows in the main-deck dining room and a crystal skylight to help bring in as much natural light as possible. Controls on the LED lights help match the tone of the daylight in the interior. Creating beautifully crafted and environmentally friendly yachts will keep Benetti high on the 26 North Yachts’ Top 10 list.
