New England in general, and Boston in particular, is known to be a boating and yachting capital. “Beantown,” recently played host to the 318-foot superyacht Vava II.
The superyacht made quite an impression when she arrived in Boston Harbor on July 30th, docking at the Boston Yacht Haven. According to a local news site, The North End Waterfront, Vava II was the largest British-built superyacht when she was originally launched in 2009.
Vava II is estimated to cost $150 million and is owned by Swiss-Italian billionaire, Ernesto Bertarelli and his wife, Kirsty. Bertarelli was CEO of Serono, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, founded by his father and sold to Merck in 2007. He is currently owner of Kedge Capital Group and part of the sailing team, Alinghi, which won the America’s cup twice. According to a profile about the famous graduate on Babson College’s website. “Bertarelli served as navigator aboard Alinghi in 2003 and as an afterguard runner and grinder on the boat in 2007.” Kirsty Bertarelli is a former Ms. UK and British pop star.
According to the Boston Globe, as of the morning of the 31st, the massive superyacht was moored near Long Wharf, not far from the city’s Harbor Walk, drawing “oohs and ahhs” from onlookers and paparazzi alike.
Vava II Yacht Docked at Boston Yacht Haven
While the Globe could not confirm if owner Bertarelli was on board, they did, however report that there is a good chance he would be, given his ties to the area. The paper said that the sailing enthusiast graduated from Babson College in 1989, and he earned an MBA at Harvard Business School four years later. He also has a passion for yachts.
The incredible superyacht features a fold-down beach club and a pool which can be varied in depth to cater to the guests’ preferences, she has super-opulent guest cabins, four boats to ferry passengers to shore, and a helicopter.
In 2015, Vava II made a similar splash in our area, arriving in Ft. Lauderdale, as captured by the city’s webcam, seen in the video below.
Other Superyachts in Boston
Summer in Boston and New England is a great time for yachting, yacht races, whale watching, and other types of yacht charters. In fact, according to the Globe, Vava II, is hardly Boston Harbor’s first experience with a world-renown superyacht. In 2016, a 288-foot-long superyacht, complete with a basketball hoop on deck, was docked in the city.
At the time, Boston police shared a picture of the boat on Twitter, and said it was owned by Dallas Mavericks, owner Mark Cuban. But the television personality staunchly denied those rumors by repeatedly saying he had no connection to the vessel.
