Can a Luxury Motor Yacht Be Environmentally Friendly?

Motor Yachts are known for their speed, their grace, and their luxury. But, with their big diesel engines, they are not exactly known for being “green.” That is all changing with a move towards more “eco-friendly” yachts. Many yacht builders are including more green practices in their manufacturing processes and material, and recent years have seen the introduction of several hybrid motor yachts.

Hybrids Make Their Debuts

The Seaway Greenline 48 Hybrid made her debut in 2014 at the Dusseldorf Boat Show. The Greenline 48 is the company’s flagship eco-friendly yacht. The eco-friendly technology behind the Greenline 48 Hybrid was first introduced on the Greenline 33, but according to the manufacturer the 48 represents, “a next-generation hybrid system.” The 48 combines electric technology with solar panels and a new hull design offering greater efficiency, but not at the expense of any comfort or luxury.

From the outside, the Greenline 48 doesn’t look much different from any other luxury motor yacht. She is sporty with stylish lines, and scintillating glass surfaces. She even sports a Fly Bridge, just in front of which you will find the only hint that she is a hybrid – a large solar panel.

At just under 50ft, the Greenline 48 has a 16ft beam with a salon that seats eight, an electrically-operated sliding roof, three cabins, six beds, and three bathrooms complete with showers.

A Hybrid Super Yacht?

If something larger is in your sights, hybrids are also finding their way into the superyacht categories. Renowned Dutch manufacturer Heesen Yachts unveiled its NOVA superyacht hybrid concept at the 2015 Monaco Yacht Show. The “NOVA” is a breathtaking 164ft premier luxury yacht.

At the time, Heesen said that NOVA “represents a ground-breaking concept in new Hybrid solutions that will allow the captain to choose from four different propulsion modes.” Depending on the mode, the diesel engines, the main generators or the e-generators take on a different role. The boat will be able to “run as quite as a sailing yacht,” when using the e-generators only. She can achieve speeds up to 9 knots in this quiet cruising mode.

Nova Project

There was a buyer for the NOVA project in 2016, and just this month, Hessen announced that construction of the concept yacht, which is now named “Home,” is underway at the Dutch yacht builder’s shipyard in Oss.

According to the release, Home, is “a high-performance and comfortable Fast Displacement yacht with reduced environmental impact, wrapped in a design package with exterior lines by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects and interior styling by Italian designer Cristiano Gatto, appointed by the owner.”

The company press release went on to say that Home “is the world’s first fast displacement with hybrid propulsion. In this case, ‘hybrid’ means that the yacht can draw on two sources of power for propulsion: diesel mechanical and diesel electrical. Either or both sources can be used at the same time to provide more flexible power management and better efficiency along with less noise and vibration. Up to speeds of 9 knots in electrical hybrid mode, the yacht will be as silent as when at anchor.”

Other Future Concepts in Green Yacht Propulsion

Meanwhile, right here in Miami, Eramotive, has introduced a trio of new Solar Hybrid Multi-Hull Superyachts known as the Iris Series. Currently in concept, Eramotive says the Irises are “designed to change your perception of what a yacht can be.”

Photo-voltaic cells wrap the entire exterior of the vessels making them 100% solar powered. The exterior surface areas were kept in mind to allow maximum coverage using the solar panels, while maintaining wide angle views from within. The panels also double as retractable roof enclosures on the top three decks. The power provided by the solar panels allow the Iris to maintain zero carbon emissions while cruising at a speed of 10 knots.
