Did you know that World Oceans Day is right around the corner?
World Oceans Day 2017 will take place on June 8th. The annual global event is aimed at tackling some of the biggest threats facing our oceans today.
This year’s theme is “Our Oceans, Our Future,” and the main focus will be raising awareness of the devastating effects of plastic and other trash on the marine ecosystem. In addition to talks and seminars, clean-up events will be taking place all over the world.
World Oceans Day has been organized by The Ocean Project since 2002. The Ocean Project advances ocean conservation in partnership with aquariums, zoos, museums, and other visitor-serving and educational organizations worldwide. According to the organization, the main goal of World Oceans Day is to remind us that “a healthy world ocean is critical to our survival.”
26 North Yachts and World Oceans Day 2017
As brokers of luxury motor yachts, it has always been part of the mission of 26 North Yachts to advocate for the conservation and the responsible use of our oceans.
On World Oceans Day 2017, we will be taking part in the launch of a very special research vessel.
We are proud to announce that we recently facilitated the purchase of a new research vessel for the marine research and conservation non-profit organization, Fins Attached. The recently converted expedition yacht, started its life as Senshu Maru, a Japanese fishing vessel. She was converted to a luxury expedition yacht in 2012. 26 North yachts represented Fins Attached in the transaction, finding the yacht, and then negotiating the her purchase, which was made possible through donations by the general public, as well as notable organizations and individuals such as the Guy Harvey Foundation, and Richard Branson.
Sharkwater Expedition Yacht
She has been renamed Sharkwater, in honor of long time shark advocate and close associate of the organization, Rob Stewart, who recently died in a dive accident during the filming of the sequel to his award winning documentary of the same name. The Founder of Fins Attached, Alex Antoniou, Ph.D., wanted to honor the filmmaker and his close friend, by naming the boat, their first fully-owned research vessel, after him. Antoniou also vows to work with the Sharkwater Team to finish the filming of Stewart’s follow up documentary, Sharkwater Extinction.
On June 8th, in celebration of World Oceans Day, there will be a special christening ceremony taking place in Ft. Lauderdale, at the Bahia Mar Marina, in conjunction with Nova Southeastern University. The Sharkwater will then depart on her maiden voyage to further Fins Attached research. Stewart’s family and friends will be in attendance to watch their loved one’s life work continued through the partnership with Fins Attached.
“The Sharkwater team is proud to be a part of the Sharkwater research vessel and we know Rob Stewart was thrilled to have been involved in this significant initiative. It’s imperative we support the oceans and all its creatures, and this boat will provide an excellent resource for researchers, scientists, and conservation groups for years to come,” said Sandy Stewart. Brian Stewart then added, “A giant thank you to Alex and his organization, Fins Attached, for making this happen. As Rob once said, ‘Conservation is the preservation of human life on earth and that, above all else, is worth fighting for.’”
You Can Do Your Part To Support Fins Attached
26 North will be in attendance at the christening ceremonies and will soon be offering unique charter experiences along with Fins Attached, on Sharkwater, where charter guests can participate first hand in the research and the work the organization is doing to bust the many myths and misconceptions people have about sharks, and preserve the “king of the deep.” A portion of each charter will be donated to Fins Attached.
At 26 North Yachts we encourage all yacht owners and charter yacht vacationers, to recognize their responsibility as stewards of the environment, and the vital role they can play in protecting the environment and preserving our world’s oceans.
