North Carolina based Hatteras Yachts breaks away from its roots with the introduction of a sleek, sexy, flybridge model. Known for more “classic” or conservative designs, this latest offering from Hatteras represents a bit of a departure for the well-known American motor yacht builder.
The new Hatteras 70 Motor Yacht, has a profile similar to the Hatteras 100 Raised Pilot House launched in 2013. That yacht, was one of the first to combine Hatteras’ classic American lines with a European interior, designed by Italian yacht designers with the Enrico Gobbi’s Team for Design. However, the Hatteras 70 was designed 100% in-house, inside and out.
The Hatteras 70 features a stylish, modern interior, with upscale décor and plenty of spaces for top-flight entertaining and socializing. She is actually 75 feet long, with a tall superstructure, and a flybridge extending aft to the transom. Under the forward bridge you can find an enclosed lounge and tables for alfresco dining, along with a cockpit bar. The aft section is spacious, wide enough for a tender, or for a great sun deck. Just beneath the overhang is a shaded cockpit with another lounge. And, on the bow, there is a three-person sunbed, along with forward lounges, for more sun and fun.
Unique Features of the Hatteras 70
According to Hatteras, the interior is where this motor yacht really shines, and represents some real innovation from the venerable American yacht builder. Hatteras decided not to include a lower helm station, which made room for transforming the main deck into a large salon with the full-beam lounge sitting up against the windows at the front end. There is a center galley off to the side that leaves a clear line of sight from the back area to the forward windows.

What is even more impressive is the yacht’s 9-foot-high atrium in the midsection, bathing the interior in natural light and transforming the space into a seaside loft, something that you usually would only see on yachts significantly larger than 70ft. To accomplish this in a luxury motor yacht of this size, “we had to rethink the entire forward structure. We did additional finite element analysis and ended up reinforcing the area with multiple layers of carbon fiber. This new laminate allowed us to keep the very open feel,” said David Brown, director of design and engineering for Hatteras.
