Blog | Kleven and Lürssen Team Up for New Explorer Superyacht Project

2017 has been a bit of a banner year for Lürssen Yachts.

The German based yacht builder, is known for having built some of the largest, and most recognizable superyachts currently cruising the seas, such as the superyacht Azzam, which currently holds the title of the largest superyacht in the world.

In 2017, Lürssen has debuted, or announced several projects that rival Azzam, if not in size, but in spectacular amenities and design elements that take even superyachts to another level. Some of these others include Thunder, which completed successful sea trials over this past summer, and Project Redwood and Project Fiji, both scheduled to launch sometime in 2019.

Now, as the year draws to a close, Lürssen has announced a collaboration with Kleven, the Norwegian commercial shipyard that built the internationally known “explorer yacht,” Ulysses, for New Zealand’s richest man, Graeme Hart. The announcement should come as no surprise, as Lürssen had acquired an equity stake in Kleven earlier this year. Kleven is also the shipyard that built Hart’s new 380-foot flagship, which somewhat confusingly, is also named Ulysses!

We do not know if this collaboration with Lürssen will also be called “Ulysses,” but what we do know is that similarly to how it was with the “Ulysses fleet,” the new explorer will see its hull being built by Kleven in Norway with Lürssen completing its interior outfitting at the Blom+Voss facility it acquired in Germany.

The yacht will be over 320 feet in length. No details as to the selling price, or the owner of the new yacht have been released. According to public records, Kleven sold 40% of its equity earlier this year to a group of companies that included Lürssen, for over $36 million US.
