You know you’re building a special yacht when, at least two years out, Bill Gates is already chomping at the bit to charter her. So what’s so special about “La Datcha”, a 77-meter expedition vessel from the Dutch shipyard Damen? Only that it’s the WORLD’S FIRST private luxury icebreaker. She’ll be able to drive through a foot-and-a-half of ice, with the capability to explore the world’s most remote areas for up to 40 days at a time.
Built for Oleg Tinkov, the Russian billionaire financier, she’s expected to make her big debut at the 2020 Monaco Yacht Show. Tinkov intends to spend up to 20 weeks a year on board, and the rest of the time “La Datcha” will be available for charter at $775k per week (how do you say “bargain” in Russian?). Of course, she has the typical megayacht accouterments like a helicopter (actually 2 of them), a submarine, and various saunas & athletic facilities. But, unlike most yachts of this ilk, she’ll also come with a couple snowmobiles. That should be helpful in Antarctica, which is precisely where “La Datcha” is expected to be in January 2021.
