Blog | Lürssen’s Superyacht Project Thunder Advances to Sea Trials

German based Lürssen Yachts is known for having built some of the largest, and most recognizable superyachts currently cruising the seas. At nearly 450 feet, their latest build, Thunder, will not be the largest superyacht in the world; that title belongs to her sister ship, Azzam, which is the crowning achievement of Lürssen Yachts, however, Thunder is still one of the most highly anticipated superyachts to be launched this year.

While the project has been kept very secret by the yacht builder, Lürssen recently announced that Thunder has carried out her first successful sea trials off the coast of Germany.

Unique Features of this Superyacht from Lürssen

Thunder’s impressive black hull and silver superstructure, designed by Espen Oeino, is what truly sets her apart, even from some of the other fabulous yachts that have come from the German shipyard. Other unique features include: two large helipads, a giant swimming pool at her stern, and what appears to be a retractable helicopter hangar on her upper aft deck. While only pictures of her exterior have been released so far, several skylights, and two double-level glass atriums, leaves one imagining what her interior might look like. Lürssen released a short statement back in April about the interior design of the colossal superyacht, which merely said that her interior was “traditionally styled”, although the identity of the interior designer is yet to be revealed.

The yacht will be delivered to an undisclosed owner “before the end of 2018.” The yard adds that she will “cruise mostly in Asian waters.”
