Recently, the Islands of the Eastern Caribbean – most notably, the British Virgin Islands (BVI), have been trying to broaden their appeal to yachts, yacht owners, and yacht charters.
The Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), a member group dedicated to promoting tourism, integration, and economic development among the islands, recently announced that they have “intensified efforts” to develop their maritime sector, especially to increase the area’s appeal to the “expanding luxury yachting sector.”
A good part of that plan has recently come to fruition, with the official opening of a new multimillion dollar marina as part of the expanding Oil Nut Bay Resort and Village on the BVI. The 400 acre exclusive resort and residential community, is proud to announce the opening of the Oil Nut Bay Marina. Designed and built specifically to accommodate large upscale motor yachts, the marina will have 93 berths available which will be able to accommodate yachts up to 100 feet in length, with drafts of up to about 9 feet.
According to Oil Nut Bay’s developer, David V. Johnson, the new marina, “…provides excellent access to the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, islands and the anchorages of the Virgin Islands, as well as the Leeward and Windward isles.” He went on to say that the Oil Nut Bay Marina, was designed to “encourage exploration of the many wonders in the BVI. In addition, a new marina village and helipad have recently been completed, granting guests the freedom to head out by boat or helicopter with ease.”
The new marina itself has amenities that include high capacity shore power, Wi-Fi, double reverse osmosis potable water, tender and fuel docks, showers and provisioning services, and an experienced dock master and staff, all dedicated to providing the very best in concierge services to arriving yachts and their charter guests.

Other Improvements to Yachting Marinas and Infrastructure
The opening of the Oil Nut Bay Marina is not the only recent example of the area’s commitment to upgrading its marine infrastructure.
Prior to the opening of the Oil Nut Bay Marina, the world-class Christophe Harbour Marina in St. Kitts and Nevis was opened. Christophe officially opened in 2015, at a reported 100 million dollar investment by a superyacht owner. The Marina is still in its infancy, and continues to expand, in the hope of making St. Kitts a true superyacht hub. Currently the Marina includes 24 berths designed to accommodate yachts anywhere from 80 – 300 feet! When completed, much likes its “sister” facility on the BVI, the exclusive luxury marina will include a “shore side marina village with hotels, yacht club, and upscale dining and entertainment.” Since the opening of the Marina, the OECS says that superyacht traffic to St. Kitts and Nevis “increased by 60%.”

The member nations of the OECS are: the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Antigua, St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada.
