It’s here! The 58th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) starts today, November 1, and runs through Sunday, November 5. FLIBS 2017 promises to be bigger and better than ever!
This year, there will be nearly 1,500 boats on display, across more than 3 million square feet of exhibit space, which includes more than $4 billion worth of boats, yachts, marine accessories, products, art, and jewelry. Among all that glitz and glamour, the event is also being used by some new yacht charter destinations ,to showcase what they have to offer.
For example, representatives from the islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, collectively known as “the Balearic Islands” will be at FLIBS for the first time, to spread the word about their recent push to become an international yachting hub,
As reported in SuperyachtNews, “A public-private initiative between the Balearic Yacht Destination (BYD), the Balearic Government and the Balearic Port Authority will be making its debut with a fully branded display booth at the year’s FLIBS. The BYD is an association of leading Balearic-based superyacht marinas, refit shipyards, management and service companies. The organization was formed in 2014 with the objective of “leveraging its collective resources to promote the Balearics to an international audience as a leading destination for superyacht cruising, berthing and refit.”
Since the formation of the BYD, the Balearics have seen a dramatic increase in visits by yachts and superyachts, which has been primarily attributed to easing charter regulations. BYD aims to continue this momentum by promoting the Balearics’ varied cruising options, growing refit and repair facilities and yachting infrastructure at an international level. BYD’s first time promoting at a yachting event was at the 2016 Monaco Yacht Show (MYS), and at MYS again in 2017. The success they had there, prompted them to look for a US venue.
They choose FLIBS as their first boat show in the States, not only for its international draw, but primarily, to raise awareness of the Balearics to US yacht owners, and yacht charter clientele, who may be less familiar with the Islands.
