Superyacht Le Grand Bleu Wows in New Jersey Waters

New Jersey may be best known for its famous shore, its “real housewives”, and as the home of The Boss, but this year, the Garden State has another feather in its cap – it has attracted one of the world’s most lavish superyachts to its waters. According to local papers, the nearly 370-foot-long megayacht, Le Grand Bleu, was anchored between the tip of Sandy Hook and the U.S. Naval Weapons Station Earle’s munitions pier in Leonardo for “over two weeks” in June.

While the enormous motor yacht turned many heads during her visit, not everybody was pleased. The superyacht sparked some controversy when tourists and residents around Liberty State Park complained about obstructed views of the Statue of Liberty when she was anchored only a few hundred feet away from the New Jersey state park. However according to Coast Guard officials, the vessel was not in any kind of violation of anchoring restrictions. “To be honest, they might just be going about their business and found a place outside the restricted zone where they were able to anchor,” said Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier, a spokesperson with the U.S. Coast Guard’s Manhattan outpost.

The superyacht spent most of her time resting in the channel heading out towards the Raritan Bay and coming into the Shrewsbury River between the two federally-operated properties.

More About the Superyacht Le Grand Blue

Le Grande Blue is an expedition class yacht. She was built for US telecommunications baron, John McCaw, and was subsequently sold to the Russian businessman, Roman Abramovich, who had it refitted to his own preferences, including the addition of a 16ft swim platform at the stern. According to sources, Abramovich passed Le Grand Bleu to his friend and business associate, Eugene Shvidler, in June 2006.

The yacht has a crew of 65 and carries a veritable arsenal of tenders and water toys, both on her aft decks and in her extensive below-deck garage, where there is a large aquarium. She is so large, she holds several other watercraft aboard, including a 72 foot Dubois-designed sailing yacht, Bellatrix, a 69 foot Sunseeker motor yacht, two 33 foot, 60-knot Buzzi sports boats, and a landing craft to carry a 4×4 Land Rover used for excursions ashore.

As you could imagine, Le Grande Blue has caused quite the buzz among boaters and gawkers in and around Sandy Hook!
