It’s a bird, It’s a plane, it’s…A BOAT! More specifically, a Flying Inflatable Boat, or FIB, and it can literally take your motor yacht’s tender to the “next level.”
The sky’s the limit when it comes to fun with this ultimate water toy! The FIB is a product of Italy’s Polaris Company, known for building hang-gliders and ultralight aircraft since the early 1980s. The Flying Inflatable Boat is a joint venture between Polaris and LOMAC Nautica, an equally well-known manufacture of Ridged Inflatable boats, or RIBS.
The FIB was patented in 1987, and according to the company there are now thousands in the skies, being used by the Navy SEALS, Greenpeace, and found among the water toys of many resorts and upscale private charter yachts.
Do You Need Special Training to Use a FIB?
The FIB is designed to fly on all water surfaces including the sea, which is the largest runway available in the world. It is relatively easy to learn how to fly, but you do need to take a 10 hour certification course.
Unlike other “flying boats” that use pontoons for flotation, the designers of the FIB chose to use an actual full-size Ridged Inflatable Boat, or RIB, for its safety, and seaworthiness. The “deep V” of the RIB configuration allows it to take off and land, even on the roughest of seas, and the FIB is amphibious as well, meaning she is one of the few upscale toys you can enjoy on land, sea, or air!
With the wing detached, the FIB can serve the same purpose as any yacht tender, and can be used for shore transport, water-skiing and towables, or for any excursions away from your primary boat. The wheel kit can even be replaced with skis, so it can operate on snow!
The FIB joins a growing list of yacht charter “add-ons” such as the Flyboard and the Jet Lev Flyer that are taking water toys to new heights!
