What to expect at FLIBS 2017
It’s almost here, the most highly anticipated boating event of the year, the spectacular Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show!
The 58th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) hits town this Wednesday, November 1, and runs through Sunday, November 5. FLIBS 2017 promises to be bigger and better than ever.
As always, exhibits range from yacht builders and designers to exotic cars and brokerage yachts. A wide variety of boats will be on display including runabouts, sportfishers, high performance boats, center consoles, cabin cruisers, flats boats, skiffs, express cruisers, sailing yachts, motor yachts, bowriders, catamarans, ski boats, jet boats, trawlers, inflatables, canoes, and of course, extraordinary superyachts.
As we reported earlier this year, the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, the boat show’s owner, and Informa Exhibitions, the producer, signed a 30-year lease extension with the operators of Bahia Mar to keep the event at the site through 2050. And as we also reported, thankfully Hurricane Irma’s impact at the marina, was minimal, and the furious storm did little to put a damper on any of the events scheduled for FLIBS 2017. In fact, in a bizarre twist of events, many industry observers believe that the impact of Irma throughout South Florida, may actually increase sales at FLIBS this year, as many Floridian boaters descend on the show with insurance checks in hand, looking to replace damaged boats and marine accessories they may have lost in the storm.
According to Informa’s vice president and general manager, President Andrew Doole, online ticket sales are up at 16% over this same time last year, and he attributes at least some of that to the so-called “Irma Effect.” “We expect there will be a lot of insurance checks that will be spent at the show,” said Doole, “both from boaters looking for new vessels, parts or repairs, and marinas looking to rebuild docks and boat lifts.”
What’s New for FLIBS 2017
The big news of “what’s new” at FLIBS this year, is that visitors can expect to experience the first phase of what has been an ongoing “makeover” of Bahia Mar. “We’re really a location that can be transformed into something completely different,” says Megan Lagasse, Bahia Mar Marina general manager. She went on to say that they have completed a $7 million redesign, just in time for the boat show. The new look is “inspired by the ocean and the city’s nautical lifestyle.” According to the Fort Lauderdale Daily, the current redesign is merely “the first stage of well-known real estate developer, James ‘Jimmy’ Tate’s plans for the property to ensure it’s the most desirable destination in Fort Lauderdale. “I’m very excited about it and I hope the community, once they get to see it, will be equally as excited,” Tate says.
Among debuts at FLIBS this year will be Intrepid 407 Panacea, a 40ft luxury day boat, several new models from Sea Ray, including the Sea Ray SLX 400 OB, and the highly anticipated Hatteras M90 Panacera.
Overall, nearly 1,500 boats will be on display during the show, across more than 3 million square feet of exhibit space which includes more than $4 billion worth of boats, yachts, marine accessories and products, marine art and jewelry.
