Yard Profile: Outer Reef
Yard Basics: Outer Reef Yachts
Shipyard Location: Kaohsiung, Taiwan, headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as well as sales and service locations in Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States. Eight new offices have opened worldwide since 2008.
Year Established: 2001
History: Jeff Druek founded Outer Reef after custom-building his first yacht when he was unable to find a vessel that fit his specifications. He partnered with Tania Yacht Company in Taiwan, a fourth-generation shipbuilder, after building yachts at a couple different Taiwanese yards. Druek says, “Tania was the highest quality and most receptive to custom work, and almost every boat is custom-built above the hull.”
Specialty: Outer Reef builds long-range cruisers that are customized for each owner-operator. The yard focuses on semi-custom yachts for the owner-operator and builds yachts that are easy and economical to operate. The hulls are produced using hand-lamination and vacuum-bagged infusion. Druek says, “We want our boats heavier” for those cruising through rough seas.
No yachts are kept in inventory.
Demographics: The Outer Reef buyer is getting younger, Druek says. The average age, currently 60, has dropped five to eight years and is a transitional customer. For example, a common customer shifts away from sportfishermen to a long-range cruiser with a versatile cockpit with fishboxes and live wells.
Annual Production: The yard launches 11 or 12 yachts on average per year and has been building at capacity since 2007.
Recent launches: TI Punch, which – in addition to the modern interior – features a cockpit fitted out with a dive compressor.
Build Time: Once construction begins, the average construction time is 10 to 12 months. Initial engineering and design takes at least a month or two.
After Sales: Where Outer Reef has offices, it has maintenance and warranty repair, but to fill the gaps, the builder sought partners with a similar vision. In the East Coast of the United States, Outer Reef has partnered with Hinckley Yachts, where there is a manager dedicated to Outer Reef customers. Druek sought out a non-competitive builder with a similar customer-focused philosophy.
