Two years old and already an update? Never one to rest on their laurels, Ocean Alexander’s innovative, forward-reaching approach is evident in their brush- up of the 90 after about a dozen successful launches. The changes will please both owners and crew.  Ocean Alexander’s obsession with hydrodynamic science, naval design, refinement, craftsmanship and the latest technology are reflected in the revisions.

For starters, the Ocean Alexander’s décor now more closely resembles that of the raved-about 120, thanks to Evan K. Marshall. People movement on the vessel has been shifted to the starboard side for easier flow throughout.  The helm station has an ergonomic upgrade while still retaining the same exquisite woods typically reserved for guest areas.  A dinette has been added immediately to port for crew or guests. The standard skylounge now has an option for a hard-topped open flybridge for additional entertaining and lounging possibilities. The master bath replicates the stonework with stainless steel inserts in granite that are currently on the 120. Not as sexy, but important, a new air system helps circulate filtered air throughout the staterooms in an enhanced way. A dedicated laundry room has been added to crew quarters—with a hideaway ironing board.  Upgrades also extend to Ocean Alexander’s turnkey inclusions such as a 15’ tender, glassware, spare parts and more.

Some things haven’t changed on the Ocean Alexander 90, including the dramatic, oversized main salon windows that accent her 22.5’ beam. Barstools that belly up to the counter in the country-styled galley will remain, too, since they facilitate entertaining in this space that opens to the helm and dinette.  Accommodations are flexible, allowing a three- or four-stateroom configuration below decks.  Spiral staircase access from the main deck level culminates in a well-finished lobby. The king master suite with dramatic double-door and marble inlay entry remains full-beam in either case.  Accents throughout include sapele wood (an incredibly strong hardwood native to Africa that’s less affected by water than other woods) and burlwood cabinetry.

Crew quarters are accessed in two ways—from the aft deck or through a watertight door from the swim platform. Flexibility in the crew quarters is reflected in a space that holds a stainless steel-topped work area with tool chest that can be converted to sleeping area when a Pullman lowers.

The Ocean Alexander 90 is powered by twin 1,622-hp C32 ACERT Caterpillar engines for top speeds of just over 20 knots (380-nm range) and cruising at 10 knots (3,300-nm range). She draws between 5.5’ and 6.5’.

The 90’s exterior lines are particularly deceiving, giving her the appearance and feel of a much larger megayacht.  Her design reflects a blend of both traditional and modern styling. The Portuguese bridge which enables access completely around the pilothouse exterior is unique to this range size.

A serious player in 26 North Yachts’ Top 10 Builders List, Ocean Alexander currently produces models ranging from 72 to 155. We like their quality North American design and engineering and fine Asian manufacturing. Their yachts feature exquisite interior architectures, along with fine materials to construct sleek, modern hulls.

Ocean Alexander manufactures in Kaoshiung, Taiwan; China and in the US, guided by two generations of one family over the past 35 years. They recently announced an expansion of their manufacturing facility in Taiwan to meet increased demand of the larger sized yachts. Alexander Marine says it will close the yard in China to consolidate their experienced personnel into one yard. Once construction is completed in 2015, the new expansion will more than double current capacity. Building capacity will expand from up to 12 yachts in the 72’ to 90’ range per year to 25 per year up to 112’.
