Our First Look at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show 2017

Mark your calendars, the 58th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) hits town November 1-5, and this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever. FLIBS is generally one of the largest and most highly anticipated show by yachting and boating enthusiasts the world over!

As always, exhibits range from yacht builders and designers to exotic cars and brokerage yachts. A wide variety of boats will be on display including runabouts, sportfishers, high performance boats, center consoles, cabin cruisers, flats boats, skiffs, express cruisers, sailing yachts, motor yachts, bowriders, catamarans, ski boats, jet boats, trawlers, inflatables, canoes, and of course, extraordinary superyachts.

It has been said that FLIBS means more to our local economy than a Super Bowl. However, beyond the financial benefits the show brings to the community, the event also has very deep ties to many historical Ft. Lauderdale businesses and locations such as the Bahia Mar Marina. Bahia Mar is the official host of FLIBS, and has been undergoing a makeover, just in time for the upcoming show. According to the Ft. Lauderdale Daily, “the iconic Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort has been home to the boat show since 1976. Boasting an adjacent 250-slip marina, more than 4 miles of floating docks, a recent Foreign-Trade Zone designation and the ability to connect to neighboring marinas, this waterfront property is the perfect spot to serve as the centerpiece of the FLIBS—and that’s where it will stay.”

As we reported early this year, the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, the boat show’s owner, and Informa Exhibitions, the producer, signed a 30-year lease extension with the operators of Bahia Mar to keep the event at the site through 2050.

What’s New for FLIBS 2017

The big news of “what’s new” at FLIBS this year, is that very transformation of Bahia Mar. “We’re really a location that can be transformed into something completely different,” says Megan Lagasse, Bahia Mar Marina general manager. She went on to say that they have completed a $7 million redesign, just in time for the boat show. The new look is “inspired by the ocean and the city’s nautical lifestyle.” Again, according to the Fort Lauderdale Daily, the current redesign is merely “the first stage of James ‘Jimmy’ Tate’s plans for the property to ensure it’s the most desirable destination in Fort Lauderdale. “I’m very excited about it and I hope the community, once they get to see it, will be equally as excited,” Tate says.

Among debuts at FLIBS this year will be Intrepid 407 Panacea, a 40ft luxury day boat, several new models from Sea Ray, including the Sea Ray SLX 400 OB, and the highly anticipated Hatteras M90 Panacera.

Overall, nearly 1,500 boats will be on display during the show, across more than 3 million square feet of exhibit space which includes more than $4 billion worth of boats, yachts, marine accessories and products, marine art and jewelry.
