Contemplating a last-minute luxury getaway? Better idea: build a dreamy retreat right in your summer home with designer furniture pieces such as hanging lounge chairs, daybeds, and pergolas. We scoured the 2022 editions of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York and the Salone del Mobile in Milan for the latest debuts and timeless classics, and then we created this roundup of the chicest in dreamy outdoor design just for you.

Suspended sanctuaries

Suspended sanctuaries - Dedon - Bringing Resort Life to the Summer Home

Let’s face it: whenever we think of resort life, there always seems to be a swing in the picture à la Bali, which is fair enough, as swings and hanging loungers are remarkably multifunctional. They’re calm sanctuaries in meditative moments, but also a chance for rowdy merriment in group settings.

Our picks: For those looking for a porch-style configuration, Dutch designer Edward van Vliet’s swing design for Paula Lenti (a Louis Vuitton partner brand) has an ash wood swing suspended by stainless-steel cables. The KIDA Lounge Chair and the Nestrest Hanging Lounger — both by the German brand Dedon — boast the brand’s signature handwoven fiber technique. And there’s room for two on the Allaperto Nautic free-standing swing by the Milanese brand Ethimo, ideal for poolside relaxation.

Shade and refuge

Shade and Refuge - Bringing Resort Life to the Summer Home

It goes without saying that sun safety is imperative, and no outdoor space is complete without shade from those vicious peak hours. Luckily for us, we live at a time when top design houses are feuding to craft the finest pergola. You’ll still want to grab your trusty sunscreen, though.

Our picks: The sun-averse are likely to enjoy Gandía Blasco’s pergolas, configurable with curtains, vertical slats, and blinds, as well as lighting and USB charging ports. Tuuci — a Miami-based brand that supplies Ritz-Carlton and Soho House, among others — continues to be the best bet for parasols. Their Ocean Master M1 Manta was inspired by the manta ray and is built with marine-grade durability. Bring superstar designer Philippe Starck into your home with the JANUS et Cie Serengeti two-seater sofa, which features a weather-tested canvas canopy for the sunniest of days. For full resort mode, add a gabled, pyramid-like roof like the one found on Vondom’s Vineyard Daybed.

Poolside dining

Poolside dining - Bringing Resort Life to the Summer Home

Forget standard backyard barbeques. Summer garden and pool parties warrant full-fledged kitchens with generous counter space to whip up platters of prosciutto and melon. Easy access to oranges for that spritz? Yes, please. Plus, that influencer-inspired floating pool tray isn’t going to prepare itself.

Our picks: Those looking for a dash of contrasting colors and retro chic can relish in the new modular CUBE collection from Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens, which debuted in May at ICFF in New York (though you’ll have to wait until 2023 for the collection to officially launch). Another modular option is RODA’s NORMA outdoor kitchen. Its gas-powered cooking range can be wheeled anywhere for a cheeky tableside experience. Prefer a more modest flair? Kettal’s highly-customizable kitchens are sophisticated enough to blend into whatever space you tuck them in. And we can’t forget Boffi, the ultimate Italian design brand (and a Sanlorenzo favorite). Their minimal K2 Outdoor features a standalone mono-bloc that can be closed off and used for dining.
